Laurentine Media Center
What is the Media Center?
The main purpose of the St. Michael Laurentine Media Center is to provide access to a wide variety of information through a selection of media including books, videos, software, internet and periodicals. It is vital that we educate students how to best access and use the needed information through media skills. Our curriculum also stresses lifelong learning, media ethics and literature appreciation.
Our library uses Mackin to run through a collection analysis yearly. This allows us to stay on top of our collection’s age and age-level appropriateness. Books are donated to Books for Africa. Over $10,000.00 in new books is donated yearly to our Media Center and Classroom libraries through our Scholastic and Barnes & Noble book fairs. We have implemented the following programs to encourage and support reading at our school:
Book Talk
Kids Are Authors
All School Read Alouds
Timberwolves Read To Achieve reading incentive.
Grades 3-8 are encouraged to read and participate in the Maud Hart Lovelace program.
We work with our 7th and 8th grade students using the TRAILS testing, Tool for Real-time Assessment of information Literacy Skills.
Author of the Month, National Library Week/School Library Media Month, Children’s Book Week and promote local Summer Reading Programs.
